Flint, Michigan, is located on the Flint River with a population of 100,000. The state is divided by Lake Michigan, and also borders three other Great Lakes. It has the most inland coastline in the country. The access to deep inland waters offers much space for shipbuilding. Defoe Shipyard and Eldean Shipyard were two sites where workers were exposed to asbestos.
Powerplants
Like most states, Michigan has had problems with asbestos exposure in its powerplants. Companies including Central Michigan Light and Power, Detroit Edison, and Northern Michigan Electric Cooperative all exposed their workers to asbestos.
Oil Refineries
Michigan does not have a large oil industry, but there are some oil refineries and distribution centers that used asbestos to prevent fires because of the hazard of the fuel. During the trial, a doctor testified that he studied more than 165 mesothelioma cases and found that friction products that contain asbestos are likely to cause mesothelioma. GM was found 70% liable in the case.
In another GM case, a warehouse worker was exposed to asbestos while handling brake and clutch parts. Also, his father worked at a GM warehouse and brought asbestos fibers home on his clothes. The man, a boy at the time, was exposed to asbestos there as well.
The jury found GM liable in the case and awarded the former mechanic $30 million.
